The Hive: An Exploration of Swarm Dynamics and Fluid Occupation of Space
Donald Lee Derrickson Ave. Knoxville, TN
Studio Critic: Tracy Moir-McClean
Through the integration of visual art drones, I aimed to bridge the gap between the ground plane and the infinite-like airspace looming above it by providing the greater Knoxville community with a source of entertainment that deepens their understanding of the often ignored and unused vertical space. Temporary installations of visual drones expand the realm of comprehensible space that was previously unoccupied and therefore not quantifiable by most viewers. I was also inspired by how a small secluded site could be adapted to have the ability to interact with the entire area of downtown Knoxville, and the dynamic scales of the operation required to fill those diverse spaces.
Through the designation and analysis of three realms: airspace, horizon, and subterranean, I hoped to design an architecture that could move fluidly between the three. By drawing on the positive attributes of both tectonic and stereotomic elements, I created a juxtaposition of heavy, concrete massing sustaining the cave to the lighter steel structure creating the tower and antenna.
